(1921–89, kt 1983) Conductor who was much involved from early in his career with Glyndebourne, of which he eventually became musical director (1969–77). He was also musical director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (1957–63) and of the London Philharmonic (1962–6). The two posts which he held until his last year were as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (from 1982) and of the Cologne Opera (from 1978).
