Press Association
|
|
(PA) Britain's national news agency, launched in 1868 by the regional newspapers as a joint news-gathering operation. The shares are still largely owned by the non-London press (the association was founded when the whole of Ireland was within the UK, so it includes newspapers in the Irish republic). In the early 1990s about 250 full-time journalists and 1000 stringers were employed. Until recently all news and photographs went by wire to the newsdesks, but since 1990 the information has increasingly been distributed by direct broadcast or via satellite. In 1941 the PA became owners of about 40% of *Reuters, bringing a windfall to its shareholders in 1984.
