(1852–1914) Physicist who was professor at Birmingham from 1880 until his death, remembered in particular for his work in electromagnetism. The Poynting theorem, published in 1884, states that the flow of electromagnetic energy at a point can be expressed as a product (the Poynting vector) of the separate electric and magnetic field intensities.
