Powderhall

Stadium in Edinburgh of which the name is widely known from the Powderhall Sprint, a race over 130 yards (119m) first run there in 1870. A famous Edinburgh New Year event since those days, the sprint transferred in 1970 to the city's new *Meadowbank Stadium; the distance was then altered to 110m/120yd. Officially known now as the New Year Festival Sprint, the race is for professionals (with a top prize of £2000 in the early 1990s) and it attracts heavy betting; but a system of handicapping means that the fastest sprinter is not necessarily the winner. The Powderhall Stadium is still used for speedway and greyhound racing.
