Nikolaus Pevsner
|
|
(1902–83, kt 1969) German-born architectural historian who came to Britain in 1933. Among numerous other activities as author and lecturer, he was responsible for two major projects. One, launched in 1953 and still continuing, was The Pelican History of Art, aiming to cover the entire history of art and architecture in about 50 volumes; of this he was the editor. The other, even more daunting in that he undertook the entire work himself, was The Buildings of England, a minutely detailed description, county by county and place by place, of English architecture. The first volume was published in 1941 and the 46th, completing the series, in 1974. Widely referred to just as Pevsner, it stands as his monument.
