(8km/5m S of Liverpool through Mersey tunnel) Model village built from 1888 by William Lever, later Lord *Leverhulme, for the workers at his Sunlight Soap factory. He founded the Lady Lever Art Galley in memory of his wife, who died in 1913. The custom-built museum (by William and Segar Owen) contains his very personal choice of furniture and decorative arts, mostly of an exceptional standard, with some excellent *Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian paintings.
