Portobello Road
|
|
(London W11) Street which was once a track leading to Porto Bello farm, named to celebrate the British capture of *Portobelo on the coast of Panama from the Spaniards in 1739. It has been known for its market since the 1870s. Originally Gypsies and costermongers sold here, but in recent decades it has been taken over by antique dealers. The northern end is relatively cheap and goods are heavily marked up as they progress southwards. The chief market day is Saturday, when the road is one of London's major tourist attractions.
