Porridge
|
|
(BBC TV 1974–7) Situation comedy set in a British prison, written by Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement and starring Ronnie Barker as Fletcher, the old lag with the ability to manipulate the system to his comfort and advantage. His cell mate was played by Richard Beckinsale; his enemy, the ramrod-backed chief warder, by Fulton McKay; and the well-meaning, gullible warder by Brian Wilde. A single series of Going Straight (1978) followed Fletcher in his efforts to adapt to life outside. 'Doing porridge' is slang for serving a prison sentence.
