(1902–94, kt 1965) Austrian-born philosopher who went to New Zealand in 1937 and in 1945 took a post at the London School of Economics, which subsequently remained his base. His approach, much of it against prevailing fashion, was to apply philosophical enquiry to areas such as science and society rather than linguistics. His works have included The Logic of Scientific Discovery (German 1934, English 1959), The Open Society and its Enemies (1945) and The Poverty of Historicism (1957).
