(28,000 in 1991) Town in Mid Glamorgan, at the southern end of the Rhondda valley, both known and named for a famous bridge (pontypridd is Welsh for 'bridge near the earthen hut'). The bridge spans the river Taff in a single stone arch of 43m/140ft. It was built in the 1750s by a local stonemason, William Edwards.
