Poets' Corner

Part of the south transept of *Westminster Abbey, which became the most desirable burial place for poets after Chaucer was interred there in 1400. In 1740 a memorial was added to Shakespeare (buried in Stratford-upon-Avon), and since then it has been the custom to commemorate in this way the nation's great poets. The honour is conferred by the dean of Westminster, and so the life style of certain writers (such as Burns, Byron, Shelley and Wilde) has often caused a delay of many years before their admittance to the shrine.
