(acronym for Pipe Line Under The Ocean) Project which was essential to the Normandy invasion in *World War II. In its early version pipelines from out at sea ran to the beachheads, enabling ships to deliver fuel without having to dock. Later, undersea pipelines were laid to carry petrol the full distance from Dungeness to Boulogne and from the Isle of Wight to Cherbourg.
