(1910–86, kt 1978) Singer known in particular for his creation of all the leading tenor roles in the operas of Benjamin *Britten; they were written specifically for his voice. In 1948 he was the co-founder with Britten of the *Aldeburgh festival, which he continued to direct after Britten's death.
