Pearly Kings and Queens
|
|
London's cockney royalty. The costermongers of the past, selling food (originally apples) from barrows, were known for the profusion of pearl buttons on their clothes. When they chose leaders to represent their interests, in the equivalent of a guild, the buttons were seen as a badge of office. Modern-day pearly kings and queens, shimmering all over, make appearances mainly for charity.
