(1924) Novel by E.M. *Forster about cultural misunderstandings between Indians and British under the *Raj. Adela Quested, a prim but liberal-minded young woman visiting India, tries to get beyond the prejudices of the British community. Her companion, Mrs Moore, makes friends with Aziz, a westernized Muslim doctor who arranges an expedition to the Marabar Caves. Disaster strikes when Adela accuses Aziz of having made a sexual advance to her in the caves. He is arrested and stands trial, but Adela now admits she was mistaken. Aziz, jolted into radicalism, concludes that there can be no personal friendship between Indians and British until the end of British rule. Prominent among the many other characters is the unworldly Brahmin, Professor Godbole. A film of the book was directed by David *Lean in 1984.
