(1771–1806) Scottish explorer who made two expeditions to west Africa to investigate the Niger river, of which the outlet to the sea was a mystery. His first journey, in 1795–7, resulted in Travels in the Interior of Africa (1799), a classic of its kind. He returned in 1805 and, as before, reached the interior by travelling up the Gambia river. He and his companions were last seen in November of that year on the Niger near Ségou. It was later discovered that they had travelled a further 1600km/1000m down the Niger before an attack by natives in which Park was drowned.
