Member of the *Commonwealth since 1975. This eastern part of New Guinea (the western half was in the Dutch empire and is now part of Indonesia) was annexed by Britain in 1888, together with the adjacent islands. The area was mandated to Australia in 1921 and a gradual move towards full independence took place between 1970 and 1975.
