Palladianism
|
|
Style in architecture, based on the example of the 16C Italian architect Andrea *Palladio, who himself was consciously reviving the classical forms described in the works of *Vitruvius, a Roman architect of the 1st century BC. It was briefly introduced to England by Inigo *Jones, and then was more thoroughly promoted in the early 18C by Lord *Burlington. The style evolved later in the century into the more varied forms of *neoclassicism.
