(1885–1962, kt 1942) Aircraft designer and manufacturer, whose London-based Handley Page company – established at Barking in 1909 and moved in 1912 to Cricklewood – produced the first twin-engined bomber, the 0/100, which went into service in November 1916. He followed this in 1918 with a four-engined version, designed to carry a three-ton bomb from England to Berlin; the war ended before it was used. The Handley Page Halifax was the RAF's main bomber at the start of World War II, and only the *Lancaster flew more missions.
