(11 vols, 1884–1933) Massive undertaking by the *Oxford University Press, conceived in 1858. The entries for A were published in 1884 but Z was not reached until 1921 (the final volume of 1933 contained the sources). The original title was A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, and the vast labour consisted in gathering the quotations (nearly 2 million) which underpinned the definitions and were printed with them. The editor for the greater part of the work was James Murray (1837–1915). A supplement, adding new words and new examples of old ones (4 vols, 1972–86), was edited by R.W. Burchfield (b. 1923). The original edition and supplement were integrated and published as the second edition in 1989. Shortened and concise versions of the Oxford dictionary have also been much used as standard works of reference.
