(1836–95) The leading novelist in the Welsh language. Born in *Mold, the son of a miner, he was by trade a tailor and had become a preacher before he began to write. The strong narrative, humour and lively characterization in his scenes of contemporary life have caused him to be compared to Dickens. His novels include Hunangofiant Rhys Lewis, Gweinidog Bethel (Autobiography of Rhys Lewis, minister of Bethel, 1885) and Profedigaethau Enoc Huws (The trials of Enoc Huws, 1891).
