Moll Flanders
|
|
(in full The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders 1722) Novel by *Defoe in the form of a rambling autobiography. Moll, the supposed author, was born in Newgate jail and has fluctuating fortune through her marriages and affairs, with prolonged spells in London's underworld and in the plantations of Virginia, to which both she and her mother are in turn transported. She looks back from a prosperous and supposedly repentant old age on a life story which holds the reader through richness of character and detail rather than from any compelling plot.
