Offa's Dyke
|
|
Earthwork in eastern Wales running south from the Irish sea, near Prestatyn, to the Bristol Channel at Chepstow. It was built in the 8C by Offa (d. 796), the ruler of Mercia, one of the most powerful of the *Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Built as a protection against the Britons to the west, it effectively defined the area of Wales.
