(Alfred Harmsworth, 1865–1922, bt 1903, viscount Northcliffe 1917) The first of the newspaper barons. He introduced the era of popular journalism when he founded the Daily *Mail in 1896, following it 1903 with the Daily *Mirror. His younger brother Harold (1868–1940, bt 1910, viscount Rothermere 1919) was his partner in their ventures, which they named the Amalgamated Press.
