Sandbank in the Thames estuary, opposite the mouth of the river Medway, which was the first in Britain to be marked with a lightship (1732). The name is also applied to the anchorage between the sandbank and the north coast of Kent, much used by naval fleets in the 17–18C. It was here that sailors mutinied over their conditions in May 1797, during the *French Revolutionary Wars, two weeks after their colleagues at *Spithead.
