Nonjurors

|
Anglican clergy in England, and Episcopalians in Scotland, who refused after the *Revolution of 1688 to deny their oath of allegiance to James II and to swear a new one to William III and Mary II. They numbered about 400 in England, including the archbishop of Canterbury, William Sancroft. For some decades they maintained a separate church of their own, continuing the process of ordination and consecration in a line of succession which lasted until the last nonjuring bishop died in 1805.
