Ben Nicholson
|
|
(1894–1982) The only British painter to win an international reputation in a fully abstract style during the 1930s (he married in 1932 the abstract sculptor Barbara *Hepworth). He began with reliefs of circles and rectangles – in particular his series of White Reliefs – and moved on to painted abstracts, mostly serene in mood with rectangular patterns of solid colour. His father was the painter William Nicholson (1872–1949), who is widely known still for his bold poster-like prints of the late 1890s (including a famous portrait of Queen Victoria).
