(21,000 in 1991) Administrative centre of the Isle of Wight, situated in the middle of the island at the head of the long estuary of the river Medina. Many of its buildings are of the 18–19C, notably the Guildhall by John *Nash. Parkhurst, a prison since 1838, is in Parkhurst Forest to the northwest of the town.
