New Forest
|
|
Area of woodland, heath and bog in southwest Hampshire (38,000ha/93,000ac) which was declared a royal hunting ground by *William the Conqueror in 1079. All three varieties of British *deer still live wild there, as do the famous New Forest ponies. The Rufus Stone stands near the spot where *William II is believed to have been killed when hunting. In 1992 the forest was given the unofficial status of a *national park, the only lowland area in the country to have that protection.
