The Monstrous Regiment of Women
|
|
(First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women 1558) Pamphlet written by John *Knox in Geneva, arguing that the regiment (meaning rule) of women is unnatural and improper. It was aimed at three Roman Catholics – the English queen *Mary I, *Mary of Guise (regent in Scotland) and her young daughter, *Mary Queen of Scots. Unfortunately for Knox the pamphlet came out in 1558 just as another woman, the Protestant *Elizabeth I, succeeded to the throne of England. She took it personally and never allowed him back into her realm.
