Republic and one of the smallest members of the *Commonwealth, consisting of some 9000 people on a coral island (21sq.km/8sq.m) in the Pacific, northeast of Australia. First visited by British ships in 1798, the island was annexed by Germany in 1888. From 1928 it was a British *mandated territory, administered by Australia. It became independent in 1968.
