(London SW7) The natural history holdings of the British Museum, built up around the collections of *Sloane and *Banks, were moved here in 1881 and the Natural History Museum became an independent institution in 1963. Vast numbers of zoological and botanical specimens, together with fossils and minerals, occupy a spectacular building (1873–80) by *Waterhouse, with terracotta reliefs of animals set into the walls inside and out. The nearby Geological Museum, in Exhibition Road, is a department of the Natural History Museum.
