(Edinburgh) One of the six *copyright libraries, founded in 1689 as the Advocates' Library. It was already more than a library for lawyers when it acquired, by an act of 1709, the right to a free copy of every book printed in Britain. In 1922 the Faculty of Advocates offered the library to the nation, and in 1925 an act of parliament gave it its present name. Its main building is by Reginald Fairlie (1883–1952).
