|
Established by parliament in 1980 as a memorial to all who have died for Britain, with the broad purpose of preserving anything judged to be of importance in the national heritage. The range is wide, from securing historic houses, great paintings or important documents such as *Mappa Mundi, to the raising of the *Mary Rose and the saving of historic vehicles, including the last surviving World War I *tank and the Bluebird in which Donald *Campbell broke the land speed record in 1964. Independent trustees dispense the proceeds of investment funds, government grants and from 1995 lottery money.
