(1889–1946) Painter who absorbed surrealist and cubist influences within an overriding concern for landscape. He was a war artist in both world wars. One of his most powerful images is Totes Meer ('Dead Sea' 1941, Tate Gallery), based on a dump of wrecked German aircraft near Oxford.
