(Richard Nash, 1674–1762) Dandy and arbiter of fashion in the two leading 18C resorts. He was living by his wits as a gambler when he arrived in 1705 in *Bath, where he was soon elected master of ceremonies. He immediately set about improving the tone of the place, even posting a Code of Manners in the Pump Room. He was widely referred to as the King of Bath, and from 1735 he exercised the same beneficial control over *Tunbridge Wells.
