(14 June 1645) Decisive battle in the *English Civil War, fought in the northern tip of Northamptonshire between a royalist army of 10,000 under Prince *Rupert and a parliamentary one of 14,000 under Thomas *Fairfax and Oliver *Cromwell. In addition to the advantage in numbers, it was the greater discipline of the *New Model Army (and in particular Cromwell's control of the cavalry) which won the day. This was the end of effective resistance to the parliamentary forces.
