(the name since 1989 of Burma) Country which became independent from Britain in 1948 and decided not to join the Commonwealth. Three wars between British India and the neighbouring kingdom of Burma (in 1824–6, 1852, 1885) led to the annexation of the country as a province of India in 1886. Largely through Kipling's poem *Mandalay, Burma came to seem one of the most romantic parts of the empire. The Japanese occupation in World War II was a major reverse for the Allies, cutting off the Burma Road (from Lashio in Burma to Chongqing in China), which was the main supply route to the Chinese.
