(London W1) Museum created to house the ethnographic collection of the *British Museum, which was moved there in 1970. The building, by James Pennethorne (1801–71), was designed in the 1860s as the administrative centre for *London University. With the development of the British Museum site in the late 1990s, the Museum of Mankind was reunited with the parent collection.
