Museum of London

(London EC2) Museum collecting and exhibiting many aspects of the capital city's history. It opened in 1976 in a new building by the firm of Powell and Moya, adjacent to a section of London's city wall (dating back to Roman fortifications of the 3rd century AD). The museum was formed by the merging of two earlier collections. The Guildhall Museum was established in 1826 by the corporation of the City of London; and the London Museum had opened in Kensington Palace in 1912, returning there in 1951 after spending the period from 1914 in Lancaster House. The two were bitter rivals in the pursuit of London's past treasures until they were merged in their new home.
