(1919–99, DBE 1987) Philosopher and author of some 25 novels by the early 1990s. The relationships and sexual tensions of her characters – usually professional people – are revealed in complex patterns of myth and symbolism beneath a surface realism. One of her best-known novels, The Bell (1958), is set among an eccentric lay community in a country house. The Sea, the Sea won the Booker prize in 1978.
