Mount Stewart

(16km/10m E of Belfast) The earlier part of the house was designed by Frederick Dance the Younger (1741–1825) for the 1st marquess of Londonderry, whose son Lord *Castlereagh grew up here. The central part, with its heavy classical portico, was added from about 1825 by the appropriately named William Vitruvius Morrison (1794–1838). Mount Stewart is particularly known for its gardens, created by Edith Londonderry from the 1920s to the 1950s. Nearby, overlooking Strangford Lough, is the Temple of the Winds, a tiny two-storey neoclasssical banqueting house of 1782–5 by James 'Athenian' Stuart (1713–88).
