From early in the 20C the British showed a keen interest in the sport, with the first custom-built track opening at *Brooklands in 1907. But it was 1958 which saw the beginning of a sequence of major successes in Formula One. In that year Mike Hawthorn was the first of more than half a dozen British drivers to become world champion; and 1958 was the start of the constructors' championship, in which *Cooper, *Lotus, *Brabham, *Tyrrell, *McLaren and *Williams have all had distinguished records.
