Moss Bros
|
|
(London WC2) Britain's best-known firm for the hiring of formal clothes, and in particular *morning dress for weddings. It derives from a new and second-hand clothes business established in 1860 by Moses Moses, and his descendants (after changing their last name to Moss) were still closely involved more than a century later. New ready-made suits have always been the main trade, and it was not until the 1920s that the hiring out of clothes became significant; Monty Moss, great grandson of the founder, includes in his lecture on the firm's history a catalogue of items found in the returned morning suits (including wedding rings and on one occasion a glass eye). In the 1990s the famous Moss Bros building in Covent Garden was rebuilt.
