(1896–1980, 6th bt 1928) Fascist leader in Britain during the 1930s. His previous political career had been chameleon-like; he sat as a Conservative MP (1918–22), as an independent (1922–4), and then for Labour (1926–31). He founded the British Union of Fascists in 1932 after a visit to Mussolini's Italy. By 1934 he was more influenced by the Nazis and his followers were increasingly anti-Semitic and hooligan (see *neo-Nazis). In 1936 he married Diana, a member of the *Mitford family. Both he and his wife were interned from 1940 to 1943 as Nazi sympathizers.
