Mortlake tapestries
|
|
The best English tapestries were made at Mortlake (now in southwest London) from 1619 by Flemish weavers. The *Raphael cartoons were acquired for this enterprise in 1623, and many copies of them were woven. The factory closed in 1703. By then several of the weavers had gone to factories in the Soho region, and 18C pieces woven in London are broadly known as Soho tapestries.
