Model Parliament
|
|
The name given by historians to the *parliament summoned by *Edward I in 1295, because it established the pattern for the future by including elected members of the Commons, together with the clergy and the nobility. The Commons had been involved in earlier parliaments (Simon de *Montfort's, for example, in 1265), but on this occasion they were more representative of the nation, with two knights elected from each shire, two citizens from each city and two burgesses from each borough.
