mincemeat
|
|
Confusingly, there is now no meat in mincemeat. It is a mixture of currants, raisins, sultanas, chopped apples and almonds, candied peel and brandy, and is used for the stuffing of *mince pies. By contrast meat that is minced is called minced meat or just mince (particularly when cooked). But in the old days meat was sometimes included in the sweet filling for mince pies. Mrs *Beeton gives a recipe which includes raw minced rump steak, together with the currants and other sweet ingredients.
