(8000 in 1991) Britain's most northerly town and the administrative centre of Shetland, on the island of Mainland. The antiquity of the area is demonstrated by the nearby *Clickhimin Broch. A more recent fortress at the other end of the town, Fort Charlotte, was built in 1653 by troops from a Cromwellian fleet. The Shetland Museum, in a modern building, depicts the long history of the islands. The strong *Viking connection is enacted every winter in the festival of *Up-Helly-Aa.
