Mersey
|
|
River, about 115km/70m long, which rises on the western slopes of the Pennines and flows north and west, passing just south of Manchester, to enter its broad estuary at Runcorn. The chief port and city on the estuary is Liverpool, on the north bank. There are three tunnels under the Mersey, one for the underground railway (1886) and two for roads (1934, 1971).
